This is a trademark of the Appalachian Trail. I think the current AT Info Packet has a picture of the Knob on its cover, and it's hard to find a book on AT that would not include a picture of the Knob.

Here I am standing on the Knob. It is a piece of rock that extends into a canyon - there are hundreds of feet of emptiness below my feet.
